Supporting the Creation of Young Innovators, Sampoerna Academy Once Again Hosts STEAM Expo 2024

Sentul, March 1, 2024 – Sampoerna Academy is committed to opening the door to an innovative and highly competitive future through inspiring and quality STEAM education. This commitment is exemplified through STEAM EXPO 2024, which will take place simultaneously across all Sampoerna Academy campuses in Jakarta, Sentul, BSD, Surabaya, and Medan. This event serves as a platform to showcase students’ work and foster the emergence of young innovators who are receptive to the needs and conditions of their surroundings, including sustainability, cultural, and architectural issues.

The STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) learning approach is implemented to encourage and help students integrate and apply knowledge from various scientific fields, enabling them to think connectedly and holistically and directly apply it to address real-life problems. At Sampoerna Academy, the STEAM learning method focuses on enhancing five essential student components known as the 5Cs (Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, Collaboration, and Character), to cultivate future innovators and problem solvers.

Dr. Mustafa Guvercin, Director of Sampoerna Academy Schools, emphasized that STEAM Expo 2024, themed “Build, Create, and Innovate,” aims to inspire experiential learning. “Through this event, we aim to nurture self-confidence and self-efficacy among our students. We’re doing our best to instill a passion for innovation from an early age, preparing them to become future innovators and leaders,” explained Dr. Guvercin.

When met on the same occasion, Frida Dwiyanti, Principal of Sampoerna Academy Sentul, explained that this annual event has been a platform for showcasing student learning progress. “This event is in line with Sampoerna Academy’s vision to nurture future leaders who are lifelong learners, creative, critical thinkers, and problem solvers. This is an opportunity for students to innovate by applying the knowledge they’ve gained at school. This year, our students created various STEAM projects that are relevant to the conditions and needs of their surroundings, including the issues of sustainability, arts and culture, and architecture,” said Frida.

STEAM Expo 2024 was held simultaneously across all Sampoerna Academy campuses in Jakarta, Sentul, BSD, Surabaya, and Medan on March 1-2 2024, featuring a total of 700 works and 2000 participants. At Sampoerna Academy Sentul, we’ll showcase superior works with titles such as PSB (Pollution Solver Bot), Hollow Block with Plastic Waste Mixture, Designing a Hyperloop System, AI-Powered Robot, and Producing Fuel from Trash.

This event is also supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology as it’s aligned with its mission to support the development of prospective young innovators. Winner Jihad Akbar, S.Si., M.Ak, Director of High Schools at the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia stated that the implementation of the STEAM method rooted in project-based learning is in line with the profile of students in the Kurikulum Merdeka which targets creativity and innovation. “We were inspired by Sampoerna Academy in implementing project-based learning which weights 30% of the Kurikulum Merdeka,” he explained.

In this series of events, Sampoerna Academy will also host the STEAM Inter-School Competition 2024 which allows students from other schools to participate and compete using the STEAM method. This event is held as an effort by Sampoerna Academy to encourage the interest of the younger generation to become future innovators through interesting experiences both in the educational context and outside the school environment.

“We hope that STEAM Expo 2024 can inspire more children to become innovators who are sensitive to the surrounding environment so that they become a superior generation who are capable of bringing about better change in the future,” concluded Frida.
